Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane says the challenge of the unavailability of medication at public health facilities is largely perpetuated by Medico-Legal (South African Medico-Legal Association) claims that cut into the Health Department’s budget.

Mabuyane was speaking to SABC News this morning, ahead of the World Aids Day commemoration in East London where Deputy President Paul Mashatile will be delivering the keynote address.

Mabuyane says logistical challenges are also plaguing the department.

“Yes, we are having huge chronic historical challenges in the department arising from our baseline being eroded by Medico-Legal but the basics are still being done. The department is still continuing, we are focusing on the core business which is improving our healthcare system. So I will make sure that if there is something like that I will follow up with the department to get that.”
