Education activist Hendrick Makaneta has called on Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube to provide clarity on the matter of consent ahead of the publishing of the matric results.
This follows the department’s decision to publish matric results using learners’ exam numbers.
Supporters of the move say this method protects learners’ right to privacy in compliance with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).
Makaneta says the department should consider issuing a consent form to parents and guardians as an additional layer of transparency and legal compliance.
“The Minister Gwarube should provide clarity on consent for publishing matric results. While we acknowledge this approach as a significant step towards safeguarding privacy, we also call on the minister to address whether parental or guardian consent is still required under these circumstances. The information regulator’s recent directive has emphasised that strict adherence should be complied with in terms of the POPIA act,” says Makaneta.
