Three alleged illegal miners have been killed in a shootout with the police in Sabie, Mpumalanga. It is alleged that the zama zamas attacked police and other law enforcement officials who were conducting routine patrols around one of the mining shafts in the area.

A police officer was shot in the leg during the incident.

Provincial Police Spokesperson Donald Mdhluli says rifles and ammunition were recovered at the scene.

“During the incident, two AK- 47 rifles and as well as approximately 500 of ammunition for AK-47 rifles were recovered at the crime scene. A case has been opened in regard to this incident whereby the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) are conducting their investigation with regard to the circumstances surrounding this incident,” says Mdhluli.

Meanwhile, Police Minister Senzo Mchunu is expected to visit the Stilfontein area in the North West on Friday for the second time this month and he will be accompanied by his Deputy Polly Boshielo. This comes as more illegal miners continue to emerge from underground at a number of shafts.
