Majority of Eskom offices closed for the day

The majority of Eskom offices in Soweto have closed for the day and the long queues have cleared. Today’s queues were not as long as they had been before Eskom announced an extension for zero buyers. These are customers who have not been purchasing electricity for the past six months and beyond.

From tomorrow, they will still need to visit Eskom offices to be assisted to register their pre-paid electricity meters. This is provided they bought electricity tokens from accredited vendors before Eskom’s deadline tonight 20h15.

Eskom Gauteng spokesperson, Amanda Qithi says they are happy with the progress they made today.

“We have done our very best to try and service our customers the best way we can. As we have been saying for the past few months that this is something people can do without even coming to our offices. It’s a matter of buying electricity, get the key token and recode the meter. But unfortunately, we found ourselves in this situation. But I’m happy that as it stands now we do not have any customers that are queuing,” says Qithi.

Eskom says it will continue to service non-paying prepaid customers and those that have tampered with their metres from Monday. The power utility has extended its deadline to upgrade metres for its zero buyers prepaid customers.

“We are going to be dealing with those customers whose metres have been bypassed, those customers who say their metres have been broken or lost or their metres are not operating anymore. So, those are the customers we will be attending to,” says Eskom.
