Body of a teen retrieved from sewage pan in Free State

The police diving unit has retrieved the body of a 14-year-old boy who drowned in a sewage pan at Virginia in the Free State.

Police Spokesperson Stephen Thakeng confirmed that the body has been retrieved.

The boy, identified as Pule Semenya, is said to have drowned on Saturday while in the company of his friends.

The teenager reportedly went swimming in the pan with friends when the incident occurred.

The diving unit had to wait for water to be extracted from the pan before the body could be retrieved.

Acting Mayor of Matjhabeng Municipality Hlobohang Mokhomo has, meanwhile, extended condolences to the family of of the teenager.

Municipal Spokesperson Tshediso Tladi says they have learned that the pan was created by contractors who extracted sand from the area and then failed to fill up the excavation.

Tladi says the pan accumulated rain and sewage water over time which posed a risk to the community.
