Mourners pay last respects to anti-apartheid activist Prof Mthethwa

Mourners at the funeral service of community activist, Professor Nomvula Mthethwa, have remembered her for steering them away from becoming juvenile delinquents.

Sports administrator and neighbour, Archie Dyasi says that she, not only developed him intellectually but also, kept him and other youth off the streets.

Mthethwa, who has been described as a beacon of resilience against apartheid, died at her home in Gugulethu on the Cape Flats last week. She was 90.

She is credited with establishing community centres in areas to which black people were forcibly moved and was one of the first social workers in the townships.

Dyasi says Mthethwa encouraged young people to participate in useful activities to keep them distracted.
