Residents of Diepkloof in Soweto will this morning bid farewell to five-year-old Siyabonga Mnisi who died from suspected food poisoning.

The Grade R learner at Dumezweni Primary School fell ill on Wednesday after consuming snacks allegedly bought from a local spaza shop.

Three of his schoolmates and friends also fell ill and all the children were taken to Chris Hani Baragwanath hospital where Mnisi died.

Mnisi was due to graduate from Grade R on Friday but his school decided to postpone the graduation ceremony in his honour.

The little boy’s death has left the Diepkloof community feeling angry and they’ve since closed some of the local spaza shops in the area.

More than 20 children have died from suspected food borne illnesses in the past months.
