Uniterrupted Power Supply (UPS) lithium batteries backup system caught fire at the Steve Biko Academic Hospital (23 November 2024)
Some patients and staff at the Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Pretoria have been evacuated following a fire at the hospital in the early hours of this morning. No injuries have been reported following the fire, which has since been extinguished.
The cause of the blaze is yet to be determined.
Lindsay Mnguni with the City of Tshwane Emergency Services Department describes the incident.
“Fire fighters used three mechanical positive pressure ventilation units to eject smoke that was engulfing the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on the 6th floor, where 20 adult patients and 1 paediatric patient were evacuated and transferred to ICUs in the other wards of the hospital. No injuries were reported at this incident.”
The Gauteng Department of Health would like to confirm that no patient or staff members at Steve Biko Academic Hospital were harmed following a fire incident in the early hours of
