Stormy Weather sign post.
The Disaster Management Team in the Msunduzi Municipality in Pietermaritzburg says it’s still assessing the extent of the damage that heavy rains and a storm caused in the area on Thursday night.
Scores of residents were displaced after their homes were flooded.
The municipality has confirmed that over seven wards were affected.
The municipality has not reacted to allegations that a lack of maintenance of storm water drains led to the flooding of roads.
Municipal speaker councillor Eunice Majola says residents must take heed of weather warnings.
“We were advised that the number of wards affected are wards 28 to 34. All those wards were affected, and a number of families were displaced. But we as the Msunduzi Municipality and the team from disaster are out there quantifying and assessing the situation. After they have gathered the information, they’ll come back with that information, and then we are going to work on it, because we want to intervene where people are affected by the storm,” says Majola.
