Two people have drowned in separate incidents in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal today.

Lifesaving South Africa’s Dhaya Sewduth says in the first incident earlier today, it is believed that one person drowned at a beach in Umgababa on the province’s south coast.

In the second incident, it is believed that a nine-year-old child has drowned in Sea Cow Lake.

He says the bodies have not yet been recovered in either incident.

“In this week alone, there were seven cases of drowning since the weekend. On Friday, 22nd November, a confirmed report of a drowning at a remote beach just south of the Mnini Resort in Umgababa as well as a report of a nine-year-old child who drowned in the Joanna Estuary in Sea Cow Lake.”

Sewduth says there have been seven drownings between Durban and the province’s south coast this week alone.

“Lifesaving SA sends out a strong warning to people to only swim where lifeguards are on duty and not at unpatrolled beaches. To only swim during designated duty hours at the designated duty beaches and for little children to be supervised at all times around pools and not to be left alone in bathtubs nor near containers of water.”
