Mbalula condemns criticism of party’s mayoral candidate process

African National Congress (ANC) Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula has condemned those who are criticising the party’s process of nominating its mayoral candidates.

The party opened public nominations in which ordinary South Africans were given the opportunity to select their preferred mayoral candidates in the eight metropolitan municipalities and 22 cities and towns.

Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the ANC National Executive Committee (NEC) two-day meeting in Kempton Park, east of Johannesburg, Mbalula says, “People like to criticise for the sake of criticising, but nonetheless the truth will prevail and the truth is that the ANC believes in participatory processes that involve the constituencies that are of interest. It has been unbelievable, the response that we got in terms of public participation, the name that we have been suggested, who should become the mayor and so on. They will be subjected to the shortlisting process and interviews, and then at the end we will select one candidate.”
