A Durban-based pregnancy care centre, Hope for the Heart, is calling for more support for men and women dealing with unplanned pregnancies.
This after a foetus was found dumped in a bin on a road in Berea, yesterday morning.
A person rummaging through the bin found the foetus wrapped in a plastic bag and unresponsive.
In a second incident, a newborn baby was found wrapped in a refuse bag in Silverglen, south of Durban, on Sunday.
The centre’s Jane Wright says these incidents reflect some women’s desperation during an unplanned pregnancy.
“It’s shocking that this is happening when there is help available. It’s sad that a mother has to go through this, the desperation that she is feeling for her to go through and abandon her baby. It’s much more complex than people think, not just about waking up in the morning and thinking I don’t want to be a parent…It’s difficult for the mother, it really is and it’s not something she is doing light heartedly”
