Ramaphosa awaits Madlanga outcome before deciding Mchunu’s fate

President Cyril Ramaphosa says he is waiting for the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry outcomes before deciding whether to fire suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu who is currently on special leave. He was answering oral questions in the National Assembly on Thursday.

Ramaphosa placed Mchunu on leave of absence in July last year, following allegations of corruption and interference in police investigations.

The question about Mchunu’s possible dismissal was a follow up question from Democratic Alliance (DA) MP Nazley Sharif on the sacking of Social Development Minister Sisisi Tolashe. She questioned Ramaphosa on the Minister’s suspension for a long period, while he is still receiving a full salary. However, Ramaphosa says Mchunu’s fate is yet to be decided.

“I have said publicly I am waiting for the outcome of the Madlanga Commission on all matters they are dealing with and it is upon receipt of that, that a determination will be made.”

The Commission’s final report is scheduled for submission on the 31st of August.

The Inquiry, chaired by retired Constitutional Court Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, is investigating criminality, political interference and corruption in the Criminal Justice System.
