ANC NEC backs Ramaphosa following Phala Phala Apex court ruling

The African National Congress (ANC) has thrown its weight behind President Cyril Ramaphosa following the Phala Phala court ruling. Briefing the media at the party’s headquarters in Johannesburg, ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula, said the special ANC National Executive Committee (NEC) that was held on Wednesday did not consider the resignation of President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Last week, the Constitutional Court found that parliament’s 2022 vote to block an impeachment inquiry against Ramaphosa was unconstitutional.

The highest court then ordered parliament to establish an impeachment committee against the President.

Mbalula added that the NEC is in full support of the President’s decision to take the Phala Phala independent panel report on judicial review.

“The National Executive Committee of the African National Congress, in the meeting that has just adjourned, did not consider and was not asked to consider the recall of the President of the African National Congress. Resignations were not on the table; none of those matters was discussed. The NEC reaffirmed, in unambiguous terms, its full and continued support for the President of the ANC, Comrade Cyril Ramaphosa, as the leader of this movement and as the leader of the Government of National Unity,” he says.
