Commission to hear more details about Aeroton drug bust

More details about the Aeroton drug bust are expected to emerge as a new witness takes the stand at the Madlanga Commission on Thursday.

The commission has been hearing testimony relating to the 715-kilogram cocaine seizure in Johannesburg in 2021.

So far, three witnesses have testified about the operation in which drugs worth more than R300-million were recovered.

The Aeroton drug bust has come under intense scrutiny at the Madlanga Commission this week.

Evidence before the inquiry has suggested that the police officers who first arrived at the scene lacked the necessary expertise to manage the crime scene properly.

Testimony has also revealed that Warrant Officers Marumo Magane and Steve Phakula, together with traffic official Samuel Mashaba, allegedly contributed to contaminating the scene.

A new witness is expected to take the stand at 9:30 this morning.
