Officials discover body of man swept away at a river in Klaarstroom

The Garden Route District Municipality says officials have discovered the body of a man who tried to cross a river at Klaarstroom near Meiringspoort in the Little Karoo this weekend.

The man was swept away by floodwaters. His body was spotted in Meiringspoort after his father searched for him.

The municipality says his body will be recovered when the weather permits for a helicopter to fly.

The Meiringspoort Pass has been closed to traffic after flood waters washed away large parts of the road.

Earlier today, a 63-year-old woman was killed when a tree fell on her in George during gale force winds. This is the third person to die since inclement weather hit the area last week.

In Knysna last week, a 37-year-old woman also died after a tree fell on top of her car in gale force winds.
