FILE: Healthcare worker prepares a vaccination
The Gauteng Department of Health says child immunisation has fallen to 75 per cent in the province, putting children under one year old at greater risk of preventable diseases.
As Africa marks African Vaccination Week, the department has urged parents to keep vaccinations on schedule.
Assistant Director for Expanded Program on Immunisation and Communicable Diseases control, Yolandie Luther says, “Unfortunately, social media is our biggest threat at the moment, and people believe Google and the AI platforms more readily than they do the medical health professionals. And unfortunately, when you Google immunisation, the first thing that comes up is myths and half-truths, and unfortunately, people believe that.”
