Major progress on AI policy, public consultations continue: Malatsi

Communications and Digital Technologies Minister Solly Malatsi says the government has made major strides in formalising the artificial intelligence (AI) policy in the country.

The policy aims to encourage digital innovation while ensuring ethics and managing AI-related risks.

Malatsi says government and stakeholders are currently holding consultations on the draft national artificial intelligence policy.

“It is currently open for public comment until the 10th of June to allow South Africans to make their contributions. Our point of departure is that the evolution that happens with AI is happening rapidly, and we can’t live in a policy vacuum for a long time. In fact, to be honest, we are already way behind other parts of the world, so we want a policy framework that will be representative of what our society wants to reflect.”
