The Gardee family has requested that the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry urgently summon senior police officers, including former Police Commissioner Bheki Cele to testify before it.
This is in relation to the April 2022 murder of their daughter Hillary Gardee.
The request follows allegations of interference in the investigation into her murder made by suspended Mpumalanga Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Semakaleng Manamela at a press briefing on Sunday.

In a letter to the commission, lawyers for the Gardee family allege amongst others, that Cele demanded direct updates from investigators on a number of occasions, and Ehlanzeni District Commissioner Major General Dorah Xaba helped a suspect evade arrest.
The Gardees say the officials’ conduct falls squarely within the mandate of the Commission which is probing dysfunction within the country’s criminal justice system.
