Mkhwanazi corruption case postponed to Thursday for bail hearing

The case of suspended Ekurhuleni Metro Police Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi has been postponed to Thursday for bail hearing at the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court, east of Johannesburg.

Mkhwanazi, who was arrested on Saturday by the South African Police Service Madlanga Task Team, appeared on Monday alongside his co-accused, Kagiso Lerutla.

The pair face a Schedule Six offence relating to charges of fraud, corruption, and defeating or obstructing the ends of justice.

Mkhwanazi recently appeared at the Madlanga Commission for his alleged illegal dealings, including fitting Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala‘s vehicles with blue lights.

Magistrate Sipho Manana rolled over the matter to Thursday.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ekurhuleni is calling for the suspension of Lerutla following his arrest.

“Allow for the investigation to take place and for that to only happen is that he steps aside. We have issued a statement calling for the Executive Mayor to act upon this issue because we do not believe we can continue to be led by individuals with questionable characters,” says Democratic Alliance (DA) Ekurhuleni Mayoral Candidate Khathutshelo Rasilingwane.

SAPS and the NPA briefed the media about the charges they are facing. An investigation into fraud, corruption and obstruction of justice involving a municipal manager and Mkhwanazi was triggered by a tip-off led by a witness, according to Athlenda Mathe.
