Flooded river disrupts schooling in Disaneng

Learning has been disrupted in Disaneng village near Mahikeng in the North West after a river burst its banks following heavy rains.

The flooding has cut off access to local schools, including Ipeleng Primary and Jan Masibi Secondary.

A nearby dam has also overflowed, worsening conditions in the area.

Residents say the situation has left learners unable to attend school due to a lack of safe crossing points and transport.

Community representative Kelapile Mohujane says the problem occurs frequently during heavy rainfall.

“We face serious challenges, especially during periods of heavy rain. Our children are often unable to attend school because there is no transport available to take them there. In addition, there is no bridge for them to safely cross. As a result, when it rains heavily, learners are forced to walk much longer distances to reach school,” said Mohujane.

Community members are calling for infrastructure improvements to ensure safe access to schools.

Authorities have not yet indicated when normal access will be restored.
