‘Over 600 fraud cases reported by residents, employees in Tshwane’

The City of Tshwane Mayor Nasiphi Moya says over 600 fraud cases have been reported by residents and employees of the city since last year.

Moya says the corruption revelations against the city that emerged from the ongoing Madlanga Commission of Inquiry have encouraged civic participation in the fight against corruption.

This has led to some city officials being placed on suspension, while others have been arrested pending further investigation.

Moya delivered the State of the City Address during a special council sitting at the University of South Africa’s Pretoria campus on Thursday.

“We cannot do this work without the collaboration and the partnership from the residents. This reflects a system that is becoming more accessible and responsive, with employees and residents increasingly making use of formal reporting mechanisms. These reports are translating into action. Over the same period, 178 investigations, which is the previous year, have been completed, resulting in 48 disciplinary actions and 11 criminal cases. At the same time, we recognise that significant work remains,” added Moya.
