MKP rejects Roelf Meyers appointment as US ambassa

The uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) has joined other parties that have rejected the appointment of Roelf Meyer as the new US Ambassador.

Like other parties on Parliament’s International Relations Portfolio Committee, the MKP feels that Meyer’s involvement in Apartheid-era politics in the country is not representative of the country today.

The party’s member of parliament (MP) on the committee, Wesley Douglas, says Meyer was the Minister of Defence under Apartheid that had caused immeasurable pain to the majority of the country.

“So, this is not a neutral diplomatic appointment. It is a political signal that the very architects of that compromise settlement are being trusted to represent South Africa now, while the majority remain locked out of land and wealth. MKP rejects that completely. South Africa does not need defenders of the past. We need representatives who will fight for land justice, economic transformation and true liberation, who will stand with us as we stand to bring a closer multipolar world, and that we stand with BRICS and the Global South,” says Douglas.
