Booysen withdraws testimony at Nkabinde Inquiry

Former KwaZulu-Natal Hawks head Johan Booysen will no longer testify before the Nkabinde Inquiry. Evidence leader Advocate David Mohlamonyane says that Booysen has informed him of the decision to retract his anticipated testimony.

Allegations against Booysen and members of the Cato Manor Organised Crime Unit include assassinating members of the Kwa Maphumulo Taxi Association.

Proceedings have now been adjourned until Friday. The inquiry is probing suspended South Gauteng Director of Public Prosecutions Advocate Andrew Chauke’s fitness to hold office.

Addressing the inquiry panel in Pretoria,  Advocate Mohlamonyane said: “It has to be put on record that on Monday of this week, we received correspondence from General Booysen’s attorneys indicating that they are no longer on record for General John Booysen in this matter. Three minutes thereafter, I received correspondence from General Booysen himself informing me that he has terminated the mandate of his attorney and his counsel and that he will no longer be submitting a statement. I picked up the phone and spoke to him and he confirmed that he will no longer be submitting a statement and he will not testify before this inquiry.”
