Hani’s life a ‘guiding measure’ for SA’s political renewal: Ramokgopa

African National Congress (ANC) Second Deputy Secretary General, Maropene Ramokgopa, says the life of South African Communist Party (SACP) liberation struggle icon, Chris Hani, should be used as a guiding measure for political renewal in South Africa.

She was speaking at the 33rd commemoration of Hani’s assassination taking place in Kwaggafontein, Mpumalanga.

Hani was shot dead outside his home in Dawn Park, Boksburg, on April the tenth, 1993. The attack had been widely seen as an attempt to derail South Africa’s transition to democracy.

Several leaders are gathering to reflect on his legacy during Freedom Month and the values he embodied.

Ramokgopa says Hani’s life demonstrated discipline, clarity and unwavering commitment to the struggle.

“The life of Chris Hani is an honest measure of what the renewal requires. Chris Hani’s life was defined by clarity, discipline and refusal to look away when things go wrong. From his early political formation in the ANC Youth League, from his imprisonment in exile as well as his role as a commander and political commissar of uMkhonto weSizwe, he carried a consistent view that the struggle belongs to the people and that leadership must always answer to them.”

Congress of Traditional Leaders, Lameck Mokoena, raises concerns about ethical governance on the continent.

“If Chris was still alive, what was he going to say about the truthless African Union, where some leaders would go to the extent of amending their constitution just to remain in power? What was he going to say? You know the answer. What was he going to say if he was still alive?”
