Ramaphosa pledges to finish TRC’s unresolved work

President Cyril Ramaphosa has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to completing the unfinished work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

He was speaking during the launch of the long-awaited Truth and Reconciliation Housing Assistance Program in Ndwedwe, north of Durban, 30 years after the first hearings of the TRC.

The programme is part of reparations for beneficiaries in the list identified by the TRC.

More than 5,800 beneficiaries have been identified across the country, with just over 4000 of them in KwaZulu-Natal.

The beneficiaries are eligible to receive a once-off grant for housing assistance or the construction of a new home with costs borne by the President’s Fund that was established in terms of the TRC Act.

Ramaphosa says truth alone is not enough to repair the harm done.

“As a country, we understand that truth alone is not sufficient to repair the harm that was done. We know that reconciliation cannot be enduring without reparations. The provision of reparations is not just an act of goodwill. It is a moral obligation and a vital part of restoring people’s dignity. Even though the democratic state is not responsible for the atrocities committed in the name of apartheid, it is up to the democratic state to make a decisive break with the hurts of the past if we are to move forward.”
