Meyerton shooting case postponed to April in Vereeniging

The case against three men accused of killing six minibus taxi passengers and injuring several others along the R59 near Meyerton has been postponed to April 30, 2026.

Mandlakayise Makhunga, Jaulane Mlambe and Sabelo Mchunu appeared in the Vereeniging Magistrate’s Court facing six counts of murder related to the February shooting.

Makhunga has been denied bail, while his co-accused abandoned their bail applications. The court ruled that Makhunga posed a flight risk and had attempted to mislead the court, citing his lack of a fixed address and failure to cooperate with police.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana says, “It is alleged that on the 3rd of February the three accused shot at a taxi travelling to Lusutu carrying twenty two passengers in Meyerton. Six of the passengers died while the other twelve sustained injuries.”

She adds, “The three accused were arrested the same day after the incident. After the court denied one of the accused release on bail the matter was postponed to the 30th of April for further investigations.”
