EFF welcomes arrests in Medicare 24 tender corruption investigation

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has welcomed the arrest of 16 accused, including senior police officials and alleged underworld figure Vusumuzi “Cat” Matlala.

The EFF says while the arrests are a necessary step, they must lead to successful prosecutions, warning that past corruption cases have collapsed due to weak investigations, political interference, and delays, allowing implicated individuals to evade accountability.

The arrests are in connection with the alleged corrupt awarding of a R360 million tender to Medicare 24 Tshwane district, a company owned by Matlala.

He appeared alongside his co-accused in the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court, where the matter was postponed to May.

Matlala, the first accused, was denied bail while the rest were granted bail.

The arrests come as investigations into corruption within the security cluster continue, including proceedings before the Madlanga Commission where evidence of procurement irregularities and collusion has been presented.
