A former Security Branch Unit officer will be back in the High Court in Pretoria sitting in Benoni in eastern Johannesburg on January the 27th next year.

Johan Marais appeared in court yesterday and he pleaded guilty to the murder of a member of students’ organisation Congress of South African Students (Cosas), Caiphus Nyoka.

Marais and other members of the Security Branch shot Nyoka nine times at his home in eastern Johannesburg in August 1987.

Sixty five-year-old Marais is out on R5000 bail.

The trial of Marais’ three co-accused will resume on Monday next week.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana says, “The National Prosecuting Authority welcomes this conviction, which reflects the commitment to ensuring accountability for atrocious crimes that were referred to the NPA by the TRC [Truth and Reconciliation Committee].”

“The joint TRC team, made up of dedicated investigators from the DPCI and prosecutors will continue to fight the deserving fight against the apartheid- related atrocities and bring justice to society,” adds Mahanjana.
