Lenasia residents to meet Joburg Speaker over water issues

1 minute

Representatives of residents of Lenasia, south of Johannesburg, will today meet with the Speaker of the City of Johannesburg.

This follows a stand-off between residents and Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) officers yesterday.

Residents blockaded roads including a section of the Golden Highway to prevent officials from Johannesburg Water from disconnecting illegal connections in the area.

Four vehicles were damaged in the process.

Johannesburg Water staff were forced to abandon their disconnection operation.

Community leader Fanelwa Mooi says there is no water in their area.

Mooi says, “Even now there is no water, there was no plan B for them to even bring us JoJo tanks or water trucks that people can get water. So all the taps are dry, there is no water, so we just calmed the community for now as we are about to go to Braamfontein and have the meeting with the Speaker and then we will take it from there.”
