Commissioner Sandile Khumalo has expressed concern about the alleged abuse of state resources in the failed arrest of entertainment blogger Musa Khawula.
The Madlanga Commission has heard how six police officers were sent to an event in Kroonstad in the Free State to arrest Khawula.
This was over information that Khawula had published about ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula and businessman Ze Nxumalo on the social media platform X.
It has also emerged that Nxumalo bought the police officers’ tickets to the event where Khawula would be performing, but he was not there.
A member of the Gauteng Organised Crime unit, Sergeant Fannie Nkosi, has disputed Khumalo’s assertion that the operation constituted an abuse of state resources.
“According to me, I would not see or suggest it’s a state funds abuse because Mr Khawula is a public figure. Sometimes you go there and want to effect an arrest, then the community they start to turn against you. I think that the reason that maybe let me leave it to that, let me not add more. Because there’s no reason why the police in Kronstadt cannot assist if Mr Khawula happened to be in Kroonstad.”
