The 19th SAFTAs honour SA’s screen industry in Midrand

The 19th annual South African Film and Television Awards are currently underway in Midrand, where the country’s film and television industry has gathered to celebrate excellence on screen.

Themed “One Story. One Industry. One Future: Celebrating South Africa’s Screen Legacy Together,” the awards recognise productions released during an extended eligibility period, covering content from early 2024 to mid-2025.

Tonight’s ceremony will honour the best productions, actors, directors, and behind-the-scenes creatives, with major production companies and up-and-coming talent competing across various categories.

‘It’s about recognition’

SA Film and Television Awards chairperson Kethiwe Ngcobo says the SAFTAS are an important moment of recognition for creatives working in the country’s film and television industry.

She says the event recognises the hard work of industry professionals both in front of and behind the camera.

“It’s about recognition, it’s about seeing, getting people who worked hard in a very difficult environment at the moment in the industry and are being recognised for the work that they do behind the camera and in front of the camera. Tonight, it’s all in front of the camera, but you’ll see some producers and some directors and we’re really, really excited. It’s an exciting evening for the whole of the industry.”  -Reporting by Luyanda Danca
