Poor design, unqualified contractors linked to building collapses: Industry body

South Africa’s largest construction industry body, Master Builders South Africa, has highlighted poor design and unqualified contractors as some of the leading causes of building collapses.

This follows Monday’s collapse at Ormonde, south of Johannesburg, where a concrete slab gave way at a construction site, killing nine workers and leaving three others hospitalised.

Families of the deceased have called for government intervention and long-term support, while authorities continue investigations into whether proper building regulations and approvals were followed.

The case has been handed over to police, who are working with engineers to determine the cause of the collapse.

Executive Director at Master Builders South Africa, Roy Mnisi, “If I mean the building is poorly designed its likely cause of structural problems during the construction or after the construction at that particular building. Other aspects that lead to collapses is poor workmanship. We do have contractors that are not qualified to take up a particular project of a particular size and as a result you find out that the structure is very weakened.”
