Nkabinde Enquiry to resume with testimony of former IPID Investigator

The Nkabinde Enquiry will continue on Friday with the cross-examination of former Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) investigator Inspector Sharmilla Williams.

Williams, who completed her testimony on Thursday, was part of the team that probed the 2008 killings of senior police officers and members of the taxi associations, which were allegedly carried out by the members of the Cato Manor Unit in Kwa- Zulu Natal.

The enquiry is probing the fitness of suspended South Gauteng Prosecutions head Andrew Chauke to hold office.

On Thursday, Williams accused the IPID executives and the National Prosecuting Authority of failing the victims of the Cato Manor Police Unit.

“When I perused the ICD investigation diary, I was struck by the prematurity of the ICD investigator’s conclusion that the police action was justified and the fact that no proper investigation had been conducted. The haste of the investigation also struck me because by that stage, I knew that Mr Ncube was aware of serious allegations that the KTA killings, including the killing of Mr Buthelezi by Cato Manor SCU, were connected. Despite this, Mr Ncube could not allocate these cases to a single investigator who could investigate all of the K.D.A. killings together.”
