President Cyril Ramaphosa and Deputy President Mr Paul Mashatile meet with South African Council of Churches (SACC) leaders at the Union Buildings in Pretoria on April 11, 2025.
Parliament newly formed Presidency Committee failed to elect a chairperson on Thursday after members could not agree on the process.
The meeting was abruptly adjourned to a later date after members met for the first time.
The committee was established to strengthen oversight of the executive.
The Democratic Alliance’s (DA) candidate George Michalakis expressed dissatisfaction over parties’ decision to vote for the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) instead of supporting his candidacy.
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) MP Sam Matiase says, “We reject in contempt the DA’s claim that it is the only party that can ensure accountability over the presidency because the DA wants to have its cake and eat it too.”
“It wants to have its leg in the executive and another leg in the legislature. It can’t work that way. Our posture and our stand point is this committee, the most crucial and important committee must be chaired by a party outside the GNU (government of national unity).”
Matiase adds, “The DA is of the view that the EFF and MK cannot be trusted with that responsibility and therefore they insist on fielding its own candidate and we are of the view that that is wrong.”
