Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi says 23 children have died in Gauteng due to food-borne illnesses.

The learners consumed food purchased from school vendors and spaza shops.

Lesufi briefed the media in Johannesburg following a meeting with provincial and local government heads on implementing By-Laws and regulations for the operation of spaza shops in the province.

Lesufi says 441 cases have been reported.

“We got 441 cases that have been followed by the Department of Health and amongst the 441, unfortunately we were 23 that passed on. So, what we are saying every week now we’re going to develop a template that will be utilised by the following institutions: hospitals, clinics, schools and community centres. So that our data is reliable, and we can be in a position to track the areas that need immediate attention.”
