Water and Sanitation Minister, Pemmy Majodina.
Water and Sanitation Minister, Pemmy Majodina, says high water demand in South Africa is posing a challenge to the country’s infrastracture.
She was speaking on the sidelines of the African Union (AU) Heads of State and Government Summit in Addis Ababa in Ethiopia.
The AU has declared 2026 the Year of Water. The continental body is pushing for a more sustainable approach to addressing the water crisis.
Hundreds of Gauteng residents took to the streets in the past week to protest against water shortages and cuts, forcing government to act.
“Our mandate is to build a water resource; dams, tunnels, canals. But what we did in Johannesburg with Rand Water we built big water treatment plant which is Zuikerbosch. Zuikersbosch will go to an extent of giving water to our neighbounring countries. Our water security is in balance,” Majodina elaborates.
