SAHRC calls for national disaster declaration amid water crisis

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) is calling on government to declare the current water crisis a national disaster.

The call comes amid ongoing protests over water outages which have left communities with dry taps for weeks.

Water and Sanitation Minister Pemmy Majodina briefed the media in Midrand, north of Johannesburg earlier Thursday.

She confirmed that water supply has been restored in some areas.

The commission says the water crisis has reached a level where a broad, integrated and coordinated effort is required to turn the dire situation around.

The SAHRC has expressed concern that the absence of water at schools affects educational outcomes as learners are forced to miss school.

It also stressed that the disruption has a detrimental impact on hospitals and clinics, impinging on the right to healthcare.

The commission warns that the declaration of a national state of disaster should not become a breeding ground for corruption and embezzlement of funds.

It says sufficient oversight measures to ensure fiscal prudence should be instilled.
