The Gauteng Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Community Safety has expressed concern that there are no operational holding cells at the Olievenhoutbosch Police Station in Centurion.
This follows an unannounced oversight visit by the committee to the station.
Overcrowding was also highlighted as a serious issue, with nearly 30 detectives forced to share a single office due to limited space.
Committee Chairperson Dr Bandile Masuku, “The committee further noted that suspects are often held at the front desk for extended periods before being transferred to neighbouring police stations with functional holding cells. This creates a volatile and high-risk environment that could easily result in serious injury or loss of life.”
