The Stellenbosch University campus in the Western Cape.
Stellenbosch University says while the national demand for student accommodation is well documented, the challenge its students face is not necessarily availability, but of affordability.
This ahead of the commencement of the 2026 academic year.
The Acting Dean of Students, Dr Leslie Van Rooi, says this challenge is particularly for students affected by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) cap for accommodation allowances.
“Stellenbosch University currently provides approximately 8300 beds in university-managed residences across our Stellenbosch and Tygerberg campuses. In addition, the university also offers a further four thousand beds at accredited private accommodation. We follow a proactive approach to student housing, informing first applicants and returning students of their accommodation status during their preceding academic year so that they can plan ahead. ”
