The Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) says it has done all it can to assist students seeking residence before the start of the academic year. This comes ahead of the commencement of first year classes next week.
CPUT says it has reached its capacity at its owned and operated residences, as well as its enrolment target for undergraduate courses.
The university says it has taken in 16,200 students on campus accommodation and some 4,000 in private accommodation.
CPUT Spokesperson Lauren Kansley says the university informed all students who still require residence to approach private accommodation.
“A 10-page long list of private accommodation options has been circulated. We have found that residence applicants had congregated at District Six campus in the hopes of being placed. These are students who have not applied for residence, live within the 60km radius of campus. So, they are ineligible for placement or they are not meeting the NSFAS requirement of passing 60% of their subjects. Many students who have been placed in private accommodation are also returning to campus with bags in the hope that we can put them in our own residences. Unfortunately, we no longer have space and have communicated that to them,” says Kansley.
