Nelson Mandela Bay warns residents of heavy rain, thundershowers

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has alerted residents to severe weather conditions of widespread rain and thundershowers expected from Sunday.

This after the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued an advisory warning of weather conditions that might cause localised flooding, especially in low-lying areas, informal settlements and locations with poor drainage.

The South African Weather Service Eastern Cape weather forecaster, Ayabonga Tshungwana, says Western parts of the Eastern Cape will also be affected by the severe weather conditions.

“We have got a Yellow Level 4 warning which is covering the OR Tambo District and Alfred Nzo from today and also a Yellow Level 2 which is covering Chris Hani and Amathole District Municipality.”

Meanwhile, the Amathole District Municipality in the province has increased its budget for the maintenance of water infrastructure by 10 percent.

This is to ensure that there are no leaks as the local authority is experiencing a drought.

Four out of the six local municipalities under the district are facing severe drought conditions, with some dams in towns such as Bedford and Kei Mouth already dried up.

The executive mayor of the district is Anele Ntsangani says, “There is no non-maintenance but there is rather low maintenance because the amount of money we have been budgeting for was not enough but we have since decided as council to increase the budget for maintenance so we are beginning to be serious about and the issue of non-maintenance will be a thing of the past.”
