Storm leaves trail of destruction at Macosa Village, Eastern Cape

A freak storm that hit Mqanduli in the Eastern Cape last Thursday night has left a trail of destruction at Macosa Village.

At least 20 houses were badly damaged during the storm.

Electricity infrastructure has also been affected.

Nopikana Mfadu, who stayed in a temporary structure, has been left homeless after the structure was blown away by strong winds.

He says he is now staying with neighbours.

“Last night there was a severe storm. Rainwater got into my house and all my belongings got wet. I am only left with the clothes that I’m wearing. I slept at my neighbour’s house as wet as I was. They gave me their blankets to sleep. I am pleading with the government to build me a house because I don’t have one now.”

The OR Tambo District Municipality has dispatched disaster management teams to the village to determine the extent of the damage.

Spokesperson, Ncebakazi Kolwane says, “Our disaster management teams are currently on site conducting formal assessments to verify the extent of the reported damage and determine the appropriate course of action. as part of our standard disaster response protocol, all incidents must undergo verification to ensure that assistance is coordinated efficiently, fairly and in accordance with the established procedures. Our priority remains the safety, dignity and wellbeing of all affected residents. Should the assessment confirm the reported damage, the necessary relief measures will be activated without delay.”
