20 years on Hammanskraal residents still battling without clean water

Residents of Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria, say they are still battling a massive water crisis despite numerous government interventions over the past few years.

The crisis stems from the failed Rooiwal wastewater treatment plant polluting the Apies River, as well as inadequate water infrastructure across the township.

For close to 20 years, residents have relied on water tankers; however, they claim they are extremely unreliable.

The South African National Civic Organisation’s Lungi Thobejane says water tanker operators sometimes even charge residents for water.

“We are struggling and the people that have a better life are the ones that have jojo tanks and can afford to buy themselves water. For those of us who don’t work, it’s a real struggle; we can go on for a week without it. When water tankers come, they tell us that they are selling the water. If you don’t have money, step aside with your buckets.”
