Carrim lawyers seek postponement of Commission appearance

The lawyers for businessman Sulliman Carrim say they will move to file for a postponement of his appearance before the Madlanga Commission this morning.

Carrim had turned to the High Court in a bid to stop his subpoena before the Commission. However his application was struck off the roll.

Proceedings begin at 9h30 on Friday morning.

The African National Congress (ANC) in the North West has confirmed that businessman Carrim is a member in good standing of the organisation.

Carrim, a senior ANC regional leader and treasurer of the Ngaka Modiri Molema region, came into the spotlight when his name surfaced during testimony at the commission, which is investigating allegations of criminality, political interference and corruption within the country’s criminal justice system.

His application was unsuccessful, clearing the way for the commission to proceed. The ANC in the province has acknowledged Carrim’s membership but says it will reserve comment on the substance of the allegations until the commission has completed its work.

Meanwhile, fellow businesspeople in the province have divergent views on Carrim’s business dealings. Godfrey Mooketsi is a local businessman while, Itumeleng Babeile, represents the Gatvol Lobby Group.

“He is a greedy businessman. He is a businessman that many in the province know that he is the only one who gets big tenders, and he doesn’t share with the people of the province. He eats alone,” says Mooketsi.

Babeile adds, “I can describe him as a person that we have been threatened about before we could even approach him. Immediately after we approached Suli in most of the departments that we hear every business is Suliman. After we approached Suli, we found him not a difficult person you can work with.”

The SABC reached out to Carrim, his business Fushion Tactical, as well as the attorneys, who represented him in his recent court bid against the Madlanga Commission, and was unable to get any response. However, the SABC will issue an update on the matter if a response or comment is forthcoming.
