Brigadier Matjeng back on witness stand at Madlanga Commission

The Judicial Commission of Inquiry into Criminality, Political Interference, and Corruption in the Criminal Justice System, better known as the Madlanga Commission will resume its public hearings with South African Police Service Section Head for Quality Management, Brigadier Rachel Matjeng at 9:30.

Matjeng is being probed for her alleged role in alleged cartel member Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala’s R360 million SAPS contract.

Matjeng, who allegedly received gifts and money from Matlala – which includes payments amounting up to R300 000 that were paid via Matjeng’s friends butchery – attributes this to a romantic relationship between the pair.

However, the Commission’s bench was not convinced as the claim appeared to be an alleged cover-up of the alleged kickbacks.

Meanwhile, Matjeng continues with her testimony as the Commission is expecting Suliman Carrim to honour his subpoena before the Commission.

The Madlanga Commission is a public inquiry announced in July 2025 by President Cyril Ramaphosa and headed by retired judge Mbuyiseli Madlanga to investigate allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi of collusion and corruption between politicians, senior police, prosecutors, intelligence operatives and elements of the judiciary, in South Africa.
