Transport Minister Barbara Creecy during a scholar transport inspection operation in Potchefstroom, North West
Transport Minister Barbara Creecy says over 290 private scholar transport vehicles have been impounded across the country.
This is in efforts to re-establish regulation and professionalism in the scholar transport sector.
Speaking during the Department of Transport scholar transport inspection operation in Potchefstroom in the North West, Creecy also took the opportunity to address the concerns of operators who bemoaned delays in the issuing of permits.
“This operation this afternoon is one of many operations that we are carrying out across the country. Two hundred and ninety-six transport vehicles have been impounded so far across the country while 241 000 vehicles have been stopped. In those operations, 1 300 vehicles have been discontinued, 1 800 vehicles have been impounded and 2 000 people have been arrested.”
The department has urged parents to use registered and permitted scholar transport operators operating with a valid operating licence or permit.
Parents have also been urged to confirm if there is passenger liability or insurance is in place.
Parents must use registered and permitted scholar transport operators (valid operating licence/permit).
This can be checked at the local Department of Transport under the Provincial Regulator Entity (PRE).
