Eastern Cape hit with another foot and mouth disease outbreak

The Eastern Cape has been hit with another foot and mouth disease outbreak in the Humansdorp area under the Kouga Municipality.

The outbreak has affected a farming community in Kruisfontein, impacting beef businesses.

Over 30 cattle are showing strong symptoms of the disease and have been put under quarantine.

The outbreak follows a case that was also reported at Amahlathi Local Municipality in December.

Veterinarian Dr Anthony Davis says they have advised farmers to move any animals showing signs of the disease to the designated quarantine camp.

“All the sick cattle and all the cattle with symptoms have been put into quarantine. We are sure that there are other animals in this area that could probably be affected. So, we will be using surveillance using drones and we will identify any animals that are sick. We have also asked farmers to volunteer to bring their sick animals so that they can be moved to the quarantine camp.”
