Limpopo Marula Festival cancelled, funds diverted to flood relief

The Limpopo government says it has cancelled the Marula Festival in Phalaborwa due to the impact of floods. The festival was last held prior to the COVID-19 outbreak.

The Ba-Phalaborwa municipal area has been severely affected by recent floods, thus unable to accommodate the festival.

Premier Phophi Ramathuba says they want to divert the funds to flood relief.

“We have decided take all the resources and the funds that were aimed at supporting this festival so that we redirect them towards rebuilding the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality. It would not be fair for the premier to be on the stage dancing and celebrating while her own people are without water, her own people are cut out of other communities. That would be a sad story when we are dancing and singing with Makhadzi but at the same time our people are mourning and our people are crying.”
