Isipingo crash victims’ families want truck owner be held accountable

Some families of the 11 people killed in the horrific crash on the R102 in Isipingo south of Durban, want owners of the truck, alleged to have caused the accident, to be held accountable.

Last Thursday, a truck collided with a fully loaded taxi resulting in the death of 11 passengers including a learner. Seven others including the taxi driver sustained critical to serious injuries.

Preliminary reports suggest the truck had worn out tyres and allegedly veered off its lane and into oncoming traffic resulting in the crash.

The families were today joined by hundreds of mourners at the mass memorial services of the 11 victims at King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi.

Sibongiseni Shange lost his 69-year-old mother Teresa Shange.

“We have got a problem on our roads, it is a problem that unfortunately our government is not willing to address if I may put it that way. Because there are trucks on the road. Those trucks if there is an accident, definitely they won’t be fatalities. For instance, the truck that caused the accident there it’s not roadworthy. The tyres are beyond what you can think of a vehicle that could be on the road. So, I think the owner of the truck is a millionaire, he is pushing his profit over lives. So, that is the story of our lives we are still going to see a lot of these accidents until authorities do something about it.”
